United States 1, Costa Rica 0: Player Ratings

It wasn’t a game played with style as the United States got a valuable 1-0 victory over Costa Rica. THe US came out with good pressure and got the breakthrough in the 16th minute when Clint Dempsey tapped in a deflected shot from Jozy Altidore. The US was unlucky not to go up 2-0 when Dempsey was taken down in the penalty box, but there was no foul called. The game came close to being called off in the second half, but the game was allowed to continue. It got far sloppier and there were few chances as the US finished the game.

Here are my player ratings.

Player Ratings:
Brad Guzan–6
He came for one corner and missed, but otherwise, he was solid in his first big game.

Geoff Cameron–5
He got beat a couple of times in the first half, but he improved as the game wore on. He committed a needless foul late in the game that gave up a dangerous free kick.

Clarence Goodson–6.5
His addition added solidity to the defense. He made a number of interceptions in the first half and was a rock throughout the game.

Omar Gonzalez–6.5
He dealt with Saborio well and seemed more comfortable communicating with Goodson.

DaMarcus Beasley–6.5
He was more composed than his previous attempts at left back. He made a number of good runs tracking back. It would have been nice to see him attack more, but conditions limited those chances.

Jermaine Jones–5
He did nothing flashy but got away with an elbow to Bryan Ruiz’s head. However, give the conditions, he put in a good shift defending and attacking.

Michael Bradley–5.5
He was quiet and did not appear to run the team the way he normally does as the midfield was bypassed due to conditions. He still played well and had one nice ball to Graham Zusi in the second half.

Graham Zusi–5
It is hard to criticize anyone’s first touch given the conditions, but his crosses early were poor. He was more diligent in his defensive work in the second half before being subbed.

Clint Dempsey–6
He had a quiet game, but he just has a knack for being in the right place. He did well to poach the winner and had some good early connections with Altidore.

Herculez Gomez–5.5
He did good work on the flanks and made some good runs early. His free kick attempts were only okay.

Josmer Altidore–6.5
When the US played with good pressure to start the game, it was spearheaded by Altidore. He chased down loose balls and had some nice touches. As the game got more direct, it was harder for him to be involved, but he was still great.

Substitutes:
Eddie Johnson–5.5
He made a number of good runs at the defense, but he did not have many opportunities.

Maurice Edu–5
He provided fresh legs in midfield and helped kill off the game.

Kyle Beckerman–NR
He came on to shore midfield wiht only a minute left.
