Paraguay 1, United States 0: Player Ratings

It was a disappointing result, but there were some good performances by the younger players. The only goal came from a set piece in the 18th minute when a loose ball fell to Oscar Cardozo who roofed his shot into the net. The US controlled possession and did very well in the second half to pressure Paraguay, but two late shots were the only difficult saves that Villar had to make. Landon Donovan probably had the best chance when a ball fell to him at the far post, but he put the shot wide. Here are the player ratings for the game.

Marcus Hahnemann-5.5
He didn’t have a chance on the goal and he didn’t have much else to do otherwise.

Timothy Chandler-6.5
He was impressive pushing forward but also did plenty of good defensive work. He was still effective as a right midfielder and has to be considered a favorite to make the Gold Cup squad.

Jay DeMerit-5
DeMerit was okay in his brief stint before he left just before halftime.

Tim Ream-6.5
It was a very promising performance for Ream. His distribution was a difference maker and he didn’t do badly defensively. In retrospect, it would have been nice to see him for at least 15 minutes against Argentina.

Jonathan Bornstein-4.5
He didn’t seem particularly sharp as his crossing was underwhelming.

Maurice Edu-4.5
He still does not seem comfortable pushing into attack. He struggled distributing the ball and often took too many touches.

Michael Bradley-6.5
He does not look rusty at all. He was tireless in his work rate and he did a good job linking with attack.

Landon Donovan-5.5
He got on the ball more than the first game, but never delivered a killer ball and his service was so-so on the numerous free kicks they had.

Clint Dempsey-6
He was involved in the attack and was one of the most dangerous players, but he often held onto the ball too long during the build-up.

Juan Agudelo-6
He was great at finding the space and getting on the ball. It didn’t have the highlights of previous performances, but he showed his all-around game.

Jozy Altidore-4.5
It was another underwhelming performance. He wasn’t that influential but did work hard.

Carlos Bocanegra-5.5
It was a solid performance for the captain at center back after he took over for DeMerit.

Jermaine Jones-6
He was an upgrade distributing the ball. He showed a great punch for pushing into attack.

David Yelldell-5.5
He wasn’t tested too much and he looked comfortable in dealing with the threats.

Eric Lichaj-5
He was good working as right back, but his short passing wasn’t particularly good.

Sacha Kljestan-NR
He had one good cross is his brief stint.

Jonathan Spector-NR
He worked hard in his brief stint.
