USA 1, Argentina 1: Player Ratings

I will have a closer look at the game tomorrow morning, but here are the player ratings from the game tonight. It was a mesmerizing game that Argentina dominated in the first half but their defensive weakness was exposed in the second half. However, overall, they were impressive in their ability to pass the ball around.

The opening goal came from Esteban Cambiasso in the 42nd minute after Tim Howard had stopped an Angel Di Maria shot and Cambiasso slammed in the rebound. The US got their equalizer in the 59th minute when Juan Agudelo poked in a rebound after Carlos Bocanegra had put a shot on goal from a free kick. It was an open game after that will Argentina having the better chances but the US were causing their own problems. It was a tremendous defensive performance by the US. Here are the ratings from of the US players.

Tim Howard-8
Their must be something about Howard playing Argentina in New Jersey, because he gave another phenomenal performance stopping everything including a great save right before the goal.

Jonathan Spector-5.5
He offered nothing in attack, but the team was pinned back in the first half. He was solid but not outstanding defensively.

Jay DeMerit-6
He did a very good job defending, but his service was questionable including one mistake that almost led to a breakaway on goal. His partnership with Onyewu does seem fairly solid.

Oguchi Onyewu-6
He was similar to DeMerit in that he dealt well with the attacks well but his service out of the back was poor as he often gave the ball away immediately even without any pressure.

Carlos Bocanegra-6.5
He struggled to deal with Di Maria’s pace, but he was the most convincing of the defenders and provided the best service from the backline.

Jermaine Jones-4.5
It wasn’t a good performance for Jones. He did little in terms winning the ball and seemed lethargic.

Michael Bradley-6.5
He worked hard all game and he was the most consistent tackler in the side.

Maurice Edu-6.5
He was better pushing into attack than I expected, however, he still seems far more comfortable in the withdrawn role.

Clint Dempsey-6
He worked hard defensively and got into attack well. When he got more of the ball in the second half, he was more influential especially when it came to relieving pressure.

Landon Donovan-6
His cross set up the goal and in general he did his work pushing forward and tracking back defending.

Jozy Altidore-5.5
He was non-existent in the first half, but came to life in the second half when he had a partner.

Juan Agudelo-6
He keeps on getting the job done. He was a perfect complement to Altidore and their movement was able to cause problems for the Argentinian defense.

Timothy Chandler-6
He certainly staked a claim for the future right back of the US. He pushed into attack incredibly well and was solid defensively in a strong debut.
